Good but not Great....!
First, the good stuff, great graphics (when my character first rounded the curve overlooking old Jerusalem, I felt butterflies!!! Superbly done guys.) Fight scenes (graphics and action) are also enjoyable- which is the meat and potatoes of what this game is all about. And the storyline is intriguing enough to keep me interested- probably why I originally bought the "director's cut" version. Also, I have Windows Vista Ultimate for my operating system, and it doesn't have any problem with the gmaes.

Now as far as problems with the gmaes , I haven't played it long enough to find all the bugs, but I have some difficulty interpreting the keyboard keys to the console controller buttons (which is an annoyance since the gmaes prompts me to use console controller buttons-I need to read the manual frequently...) Also, I thought that I had saved the game at a certain spot only to find upon reload that I had to start the quest I had almost completed from the beginning. I am learning about the save spots and the locations still as well. I have to be fair and say I haven't fully read the manual, and some of the difficulties I am having may be a result of this. But I do recommend that you get a console controller rather than try to use the keyboard commands- this is really a detractor from the immersion factor....JB

OK...!

A few reviewers summed up this gmaes very well. I just wanted to nod my head in agreement...

Excellent Graphics, Nice open ended gameplay, Good voice acting. Play control is not too bad (takes a while to get used to).

Boring, repetitive missions and slow story line. Game gets old after a few hours.

Garbage!
Save your money. I have tried to find something positive to say about this game but I can't. This has to be one of the worst games I have played in years (and I play them all). It is unimaginative, repetitive, quickly becomes boring and frustrating after you (and I am not exaggerating) do the same missions 30 times, climb the same towers 50+ times, see the same graphic cutaway 50+ times, save the same person in the crowd 30+ times, etc. Also you are not completely "playing" the game, every 15 minutes or so it cuts away to a poorly written hack story line that you are forced to sit through. The sad part is this had the potential to be something great open world design and fairly good graphics. To be perfectly honest I am bitter and angry that I spent 50 bucks on this garbage of a gmaes. Ubisoft should be embarrassed of this release and fire the designers.

B-
This game is incredibly short. 6 levels divded up into sections so u can upgrade your weapons. Of course better weapons means you work your way through the levels much faster. It does have a does have replay in it, especially if you want to upgrade all your weapons. But otherwise its just ok.

One word.... terrible!

This gmaes is just terrible... truly terrible. I was able to finish it in under a day and must agree with the review above. The gmaes does look nice but the story is so contrived and sounds as though it were written as part of a John MCcain election speech. We must stop the terrorists... blah blah blah more terrorists and suicide bombers :America is the best. I think the worst part of this game though is the aiming system. It would be fun to play online if the aiming was not so difficult up close. You can easily shoot someone down but then you have to back up to kill them again before they get up and kill you. Also if someone leaves when you are playing online the game ends.... it really sucks when you're in the middle of a 30 minute battle and someone decides they dont want to play anymore.

Overall I would say rent this game or avoid it altogether.
I should have known from the cheesy music during the commercial that it would be like this.

Good gmaes if you have 2 to play !

To me, this gmaes is great if you have 2 people to play together. Solo play is just average.

Army of Two....really is built for two
First and foremost I give kudos to EA for thinking outside the conventional gamer box and attempting something new as far as cooperative gmaes play goes.

Army of Two, in its freshman release really gives gamers, especially those that enjoy co-op, a taste in gaming potential and I think this is where the gmaes really shines. Armed with your headsets and controllers, it's very fun working together and the teamwork aspect gives a great sense of accomplishment and adrenaline - exactly what this game promises.

The groundbreaking 'aggro' concept is a wonderful idea and I can't believe no one really thought of this before. There are some nice player interactions as well, whether it be the 'back-to-back' maneuver, or the 'riot-shield' crawl. Hopefully, if there is a sequel these co-op maneuvers can be expanded upon.

The customization of weapons is really fun, and there is a great variety of weapons and choices to make. However, it may take time to achieve stronger variations of weapons as upgrades are only unlocked if you have the cash, and some items in gmaes are expensive and may take multiple run-throughs on missions to acquire enough dough.

Graphics are very nice, but objects can be repetitive at times. It's a little strange to see the same turret or bunker design over and over throughout the various levels and regions, as if all the bad guys bought from the same arms dealer.

Speaking of graphics, one set back for me is the overall environment...that is it's pretty linear and some object physics don't make sense. For example some propane tanks can explode when shot at, while others can't...not sure why. Some large concrete buildings take damage, yet flimsy wood shacks don't. Some cars can catch fire and blow up, others can't...you get the point. Similarly, I am a bit disappointed that you can't jump over objects that are barely waist high. Sure, you can duck behind them and use them for cover, but you can't jump or climb certain objects that just seem natural, and therefore limits creative strategy and game play. CoD4 is a good example on what one can do in a gmaes that makes sense (although that's not perfect either).

In the single player campaign mode, this is where I find some faults. First, save points and mission starts need to be overhauled. AoT uses the very common checkpoint system, yet somehow still seems flawed if you need to leave the game. Missions just tend blend into each other despite cut scenes, and weapon upgrade points (shopping opportunities) just seem out of place with no explanation. Also, why are hockey masks $10,000 each? These masks that serve no real purpose in gmaes cost more than some weapons do....that makes no sense to me at all. In the Xbox 260 version, you can get an achievement if you purchase all 25+ masks. At $10k each, that's a lot of cash to unlock on achievement that has no game impact.

Enemy AI isn't too bad, but in all honesty I find the enemy AI better than your CPU controlled partner. Sometimes when you issue commands, it's as if he doesn't understand or makes foolish decisions and leaves himself open to take hits. When in a holding pattern or up against a 'boss', your partner will tend to repeat annoying quotes over and over like "We need to flank him." Yeah, I understand...I don't need to be told every 10 seconds.

Overall, while the missions are intriguing and a nice modern/contemporary storyline, the gmaes seems a little short. There are basically 6 missions in the campaign mode and I found that only after a few hours I was already 1/2 way done. Good thing you can replay missions and maybe try new tactics, but there isn't enough variety to keep you too interested for too long. Solo replay ability is only needed to earn money to unlock new weapons.

The missions are also very linear, meaning there is limited exploration of your surroundings which can be frustrating at times. Why does a chair or desk impede my path here? Why can't I open that door? Why can't I crawl under that truck for cover? It seems many objects in gmaes are for dress setting only and not usable otherwise....very odd.

Parents beware, while this is a 'M' rated gmaes, there is a lot of swearing. So much so in fact, I wonder why there isn't an option at the start of the game to turn swearing off. This is an option in many gmaes , and parents will be surprised on how many times the f-bomb and s-word are dropped. The violence isn't to over the top...typical blood spattering when shot, but not uber gross.

One last gripe I have is that shortly after the game was released, EA has already provided DLC content for purchase. These co-op maps and training courses were originally intended to be included in the initial release, but I suspect wasn't completed by ship date (thus maybe why the gmaes seems a bit short), and then EA turns around and charges for it. IMHO, this should have been included or be downloaded for free.

In finality, the game shines in co-op mode and is good for casual gamers. Very innovative and can only get better in the sequel. In solo mode there seem some limitations and odd AI reactions at times, but still fun. I would have given it 4 stars if the destructible environments were more consistent, a bit longer in length, and a few tweaks to weapons upgrade/game save options throughout campaign.

Gameplay
Assassin's Creed is a third-person stealth game in which the player assumes the role of Desmond Miles, an average bartender who is the last descendant of a long family line of assassins. Desmond has been taken to a facility where he is forced to use the Animus, a machine that traces and recreates the memories of his ancestors during the Third Crusade. Through these genetic memories, the player controls Altaïr ibn La-Ahad (الطائر ابن لا أحد , Arabic, "The Flying One, Son of None"), a member of the Hashshashin (The Assassin Brotherhood) which is allied with one of the sides during the third crusade. Altaïr's objective in the game is to slay nine historical figures propagating the Crusades in the year 1191. (According to Ubisoft developers, all of the main character's targets are historical figures who died or disappeared in 1191, although not necessarily by assassination.)

The primary goal of the game is to complete nine assassinations. To achieve this goal, the player must use stealth and a variety of intelligence gathering tactics to collect information on their target. These tactics include eavesdropping, forceful interrogation, pickpocketing, and completing tasks for Informers (other assassins who will give you information in exchange for assassinating targets or collecting flags). Additionally, the player may take part in any number of side missions, including climbing tall towers to map out the city and saving citizens that are being threatened or harassed by the city guards. There are also various side quests unrelated to the story such as hunting down and killing Templars and flag collecting.

The game takes place primarily in the Holy Land. It consists of four main cities: Jerusalem, Acre, Damascus and Masyaf, the assassins' stronghold; all but Masyaf contain three sections that are unlocked over the course of the gmaes . An approximation of the land lying between these areas is present in the gmaes as "The Kingdom." The gmaes 's developers claim the environments are all historically accurate. Each city features a highly detailed environment populated by many people of different types, and as the player interacts with his/her environment, the people around Altaïr respond in logical and predictable ways. For example, when Altaïr climbs buildings without the use of a ladder, the local citizens pause, gather round the building he is climbing and comment on his unusual behavior, or how they won't help him if he hurts himself. Certain actions, such as harming an innocent can attract the unwanted attention of nearby guards, who may then choose to attack him. Neither Richard the Lionheart's forces, nor Saladin's forces are particularly friendly towards Altaïr - If he comes into contact with any guards outside the main cities, he will be chased off, no matter which side.

The player is made aware of how noticeable Altaïr is to enemy guards as well as the current state of alert in the local area. To perform many of the assassinations and other tasks, the player must consider the use of both "low profile" and "high profile" commands. "Low profile" commands allow Altaïr to blend into nearby crowds, gently pass by other citizens, or other non-threatening tasks that can be used to hide and reduce the alertness level. "High profile" commands are more noticeable, and include running, scaling the sides of buildings to climb to higher vantage points, and attacking foes; performing these actions at certain times may raise the local area's awareness level. Once the area is at high alert, the player must use both low profile commands as well as aiming to climb away from ground level or using hiding spaces to reduce the alertness level. The player, as they complete the assigned assassinations, will gain either new weapons or new combat skills including counter-attacks and attack dodges. Besides his fists, Altaïr's weapons include an assassin's sword for standard combat, a short blade, and throwing knives which are used in conjunction with the short blade. Altaïr also starts the main storyline with the use of a hidden retractable blade on his left arm that can be used for killing targets at very close quarters without creating any immediate alerts (although, if others come across the body, the alertness level may be raised). This is the most noticeable difference between low and high profile. A low profile assassination can be performed within as little as a few feet of other guards or soldiers without attracting attention, whereas a high profile assassination attack will be noticed by everyone within eyesight. This becomes more difficult as the gmaes progresses, as guards become more attentive for Altaïr's presence due to his repeated killings.

During gameplay, intentional glitches that include organic compounds and computer messages will flash on the screen. The player's health is described as the level of synchronization between Desmond and Altaïr's memories; should Altaïr take damage, some amount of synchronization is lost, and if all synchronization is lost, the current memory that Desmond is experiencing will be restarted at the last checkpoint. When the synchronization bar is full, the player has the additional option to use "eagle vision" which allows the computer-rendered memory to highlight all visible characters in colors corresponding to whether they are friend or foe or even the target of their assassination. Due to Altaïr's memories being rendered by the computer of the Animus project, the player may experience "glitches" in the rendering of the historical world, which may help the player to identify targets, or can be used to alter the viewpoint during in-gmaes scripted scenes should the player react fast enough when they appear.

Plot
The overall story within Assassin's Creed is set in September 2012. Desmond Miles, a bartender, has been kidnapped by unknown people prior to the start of the game, and is brought to a building belonging to Abstergo Industries, where researchers are working on a project involving a machine called the Animus. The Animus is able to extract memories from the DNA of the user, passed on from descendant to descendant, allowing the user to replay those memories as if he were there himself. Desmond was "chosen" for the project due to his relationship to his ancestor Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad (الطائر at-ta'er in Arabic meaning "Flying One" and his last name meaning "Son of None"), a member of the Assassins Order during the Third Crusade of the Holy Land; the researchers express interest in understanding more of how the Assassins worked. Though initially Desmond's subconscious rejects the memories of Altaïr, he eventually learns to accept them and is able to proceed to follow Altaïr's actions through the Animus.

The memories of Altaïr that Desmond experiences start in the year 1191: Richard I of England has just recaptured the port city of Acre from the Saracens. With a base of operations established, the Crusaders prepare to march south. Their true target is Jerusalem, which they intend to recapture for Christianity. However the Saracen forces are massing in Arsuf, intending to ambush the Crusaders and prevent them from reaching Jerusalem. These war maneuvers have left the rest of the Holy Land wide open. While Richard and Saladin battle one another, the men left to govern in their stead have begun taking advantage of their newfound positions of power. Exploitation, manipulation, and provocation rule the day.

The first memory Desmond experiences is that of Altaïr, along with another assassin named Malik and his brother, being ordered to retrieve a mysterious artifact from ruins of the Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem which is also being sought by The Knights Templar. As Altaïr and his companions make their way into Solomon's Temple, they discover that Grand Master of The Knights Templar, Robert IV de Sablé is also there. Altaïr, due to his arrogance and lack of discretion, attempts to kill Robert but the ensuing attempt fails and Altaïr gets separated from his companions, leaving Robert and his men with Malik and his brother. Upon returning to the order's base of operation it is discovered that Malik survived the engagement; although losing an arm and his brother, he managed to retrieve the artifact. Since Altaïr failed his mission, and other offenses, Altaïr is demoted to Uninitiated, the lowest rank in the Assassin Order. The leader of the Assassins, Al Mualim, offers him an opportunity to redeem himself. Altaïr must venture out into the Holy Land and assassinate nine men said to be exacerbating and exploiting the hostilities created by the Third Crusade. In doing so, he will stabilize the region, helping the Order's goal of securing peace in the Holy Land.

Cryptic messages on the wall of Desmond's bedroom at the end of the gmaes .Along the way, however, Altaïr discovers that his targets are bound by more than just a shared interest in personal gain, but are secretly members of the Knights Templars, with the goal to unite all mankind under a common cause. Desmond further learns by secretly reading emails on computers of the research personnel when left overnight between Animus sessions that Abstergo Industries is in fact run by the Knights Templar, the order having survived from the Middle Ages, and that the Templars are seeking the locations of several artifacts known as the "Pieces of Eden" that they can use to continue Templars' goals. Desmond learns that he was kidnapped so that they may learn, through Altaïr's memories, where the locations of the other Pieces of Eden may be buried throughout the world. He also finds that what remains of the Assassin's Brotherhood in modern days had tried and failed to recover him before that information could be learned. Altaïr's memories finally reveal that the assignment he undertook was a plot by the Templars to sow discord between the Assassins and the Crusaders and Muslims. In doing so, the Muslim leader Saladin and Richard The Lionheart would instead work together and fight the Assassins, and in the process, bringing peace for the Templars. Altaïr finally catches up with Robert de Sablé, his last assigned target, and defeats him. Robert de Sablé reveals in his dying words that Altaïr's master, Al Mualim, is also a member of the Templars, and he has now the soul-power of the artifact, the "Piece of Eden" that is able to alter what men can see and can be used for mass hypnosis. Altaïr travels to face Al Mualim, who wields the "Piece of Eden", attempting to alter Altaïr's sight, but eventually falls to his blade. As Altaïr recovers the "Piece of Eden", the device activates one more time to reveal multiple locations across the globe in an holographic manner, including two locations on landmasses that no longer exist in 2012.

It is never truly explained how the "Pieces of Eden" were created, although it is explained in the game that Jesus Christ was but a carpenter who found one of the artifacts and created an illusion in which everybody perceived him as being divine. Al Mualim mentions the Piece of Eden never turned water to wine, and that various other miracles mentioned in the Holy Bible never truly happened either, all of them being only illusions created by people who possessed a "Piece of Eden". At one point, Desmond reads an email detailing the failed recovery of one other Piece of Eden and other unnamed artifacts, all resulting in disastrous accidents, including the Philadelphia Experiment and the Tunguska event. The email also refers to the Holy Grail, stating insufficient evidence to confirm its existence, and "Mitchell-Hedges Communicators", a reference to F. A. Mitchell-Hedges and his claim of Aztec crystal skulls that gave the owner the power of clairsentience. Further examination of the emails reveals some information regarding Earth as it is in the year 2012. Africa and the United States have suffered calamities of various types; it is stated that an outbreak of L-11 disease has exterminated 96% of the African continent and the United States is facing unprecedented outward emigration, to the degree that the President of Mexico has stationed thousands of troops along the border, with monthly battles between American and Mexican forces resulting on over 1,300 casualties.

With Altaïr's memory complete, Desmond wakes up out of the Animus to learn that Abstergo Industries is already sending out recovery teams to locations shown by the "Piece of Eden" in Altaïr's memory, hoping to find additional artifacts. Desmond, no longer being of use to the Knights Templar, is to be silenced; however, he is saved by a researcher named Lucy Stillman, who reveals herself to be an Assassin by showing her hand with her ring finger closed as if it were missing. In the conclusion of the game, Desmond, having become "synchronized" with Altaïr, is able to use the eagle vision (a sort of empathic sight to see hidden messages and tell friend from foe) and by looking at Lucy, he can see that she is an ally to him (shown by her glowing blue), giving further proof that she is a genuine Assassin. He also sees messages that only he can see, scrawled across the floors and walls that refer to the end of the world described by several religions, among other writings; such writings include references to the biblical passage Revelation 22:13 ("I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."), a Lorenz attractor, the Eye of Providence, as well as part of a Mandelbrot set and other writings in foreign languages. Additionally, there is the Mayan date of 13.0.0.0.0—December 21, 2012—which is only three months away within the game's timeline and represents the planned date of the launch of a mysterious satellite the Templars have created, which they claim will "permanently end the war." The Arabic word "Az-Zalzala", literally meaning "The Earthquake" can be seen, which is the title of a chapter in the Qur'an that talks about Judgment Day. Some Nazca Line drawings are also found. There is also a reference to Yonaguni, a Japanese island similar to Atlantis. This leads to the speculation that the sequel might be set in feudal Japan, though Ubisoft has not commented. Further investigation after the credits reveals an email sent to Vidic by Lucy, stating that the drawings come from a mysterious "subject sixteen" who went insane due to what they described as a "bleeding effect" (essentially, genetic memory assimilation comes to a point where the subject can no longer distinguish between their life and their ancestors' memories. Lucy speculates that, though subject sixteen's "bleeding" was brought on by too much time spent in the Animus, natural forms may occur, such as Multiple Personality Disorder and other forms of dementia).

The Assassins Creed
Altair and his fellow assassins follow a creed, a set of guidelines that all honorable assassins must follow. In the gmaes following the creed results in synchronization, and maintaining a low profile, though the player may easily break the first two rules rather easily and with little consequence.

Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent.
Hide in plain sight.
Do not compromise the brotherhood.

Historical relevance
The nine men assassinated were based on real historical figures who lived in the Holy Land around the year 1191, but many creative liberties have been taken. Most Hashshashin assassinations that actually took place were against rival fellow Muslims. In addition, Altaïr's targets bear no historical resemblance in appearance or character to the actual figures. Most of the young men Altaïr was sent to kill were in reality old and sickly at this time in history. Furthermore, the Teutonic Knights were not militarized until 1198, starting off as an order created to protect pilgrims traveling through the Holy Land. The developers have justified these changes by claiming in-game that the historical records were altered by the Knights Templar to deceive anyone studying the past.

Some of Altaïr's targets include: Garnier De Naplouse, the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier; Ibn Jubayr, an Arab-Spanish geographer, traveler, and poet; Hochmeister Sibrand, Grandmaster of the Teutonic Knights; William V, Marquess of Montferrat, the regent of Acre; and Robert IV de Sablé, Grand Master of the Knights Templar.

The stronghold of the Creed is Masyaf, headquarters of the Assassins in the game, and also the headquarter of the Syrian branch of the real-life assassins. In 1191, when the game takes place, Masyaf was led by Sinan, who was also the leader of the Syrian branch.

Development

On September 28, 2006, in an interview with IGN, producer Jade Raymond confirmed that Altaïr is "a medieval hitman with a mysterious past" and that he is not a time traveler.

On December 13, 2006, in an interview with IGN, Kristen Bell (who lent her voice and likeness to the gmaes ) talked about the plot. According to the interview, the plot centers on genetic memory and a corporation looking for descendants of an assassin

"It's actually really interesting to me. It's sort of based on the research that's sort of happening now, about the fact that your genes might be able to hold memory. And you could argue semantics and say it's instinct, but how does a baby bird know to eat a worm, as opposed to a cockroach, if its parents don't show it? And it's about this science company trying to, Matrix-style, go into people's brains and find out an ancestor who used to be an assassin, and sort of locate who that person is."
—Kristen Bell

On October 22, 2007, in an IGN Australia interview with Patrice Desilets mentioned that the lead character's climbing and running were done by "Alex and Richard - the same guys from Prince of Persia".

Altaïr is voiced by actor Philip Shahbaz, and his face is modeled after Spanish model Francisco Randez.

Altaïr (meaning "The Flying One" in Arabic) is a star in the Northern Sky in the constellation of Aquilla ("eagle" in Latin); this ties in well with the white eagle seen in the trailer, that is shown flying over the city of Acre, and lands on the bell tower Altaïr himself is standing on. To complete the theme the Assassin's clothes consist of white flowing robes. His hood also has a hook on the end and his lower robe features a stream on each side, therefore making Altaïr's shadow in air look like an eagle. According to Ubisoft[citation needed] that Altaïr is not religious but rather spiritual and is the son of a Christian mother and Muslim father. It is also stated that in events before the start of the gmaes , there is an initiation where Altaïr's left ring finger is cut off, so that he is no longer a novice, but an assassin. This procedure provides for the hidden blade to extend from under Altaïr's forearm.

The release of the Nintendo DS prequel, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles, was February 5th, 2008.

Demos
On July 10, 2007, during the Microsoft E3 Press Conference, a demo was shown using a previously unseen city, Jerusalem. Features that were demonstrated included improved crowd mechanics, the "chase" system (chasing after a target trying to flee), as well as deeper aspects of free running. This was the first time when Altaïr could be heard speaking. It was again showcased for nearly 20 minutes on Wednesday, July 11. The video showed an extended version of the E3 demo, and included Altaïr trying to escape after his assassination of Talal the Slave Trader.

On August 26, 2007, an 11-minute demo of Assassin's Creed was shown at the Penny Arcade expo. The level that was shown was the same as in the E3 demo; however, a different path was taken to reach the target. At the end of the demo, a conversation between Altaïr and the head of the Assassin's bureau in Jerusalem called Malik was shown.

There is no demo available for Assassin's Creed over Xbox Live, the Playstation Network, or PC.

PC version
A pirated version of the game has been in existence since late February 2008 - more than a month before its expected release, though players are only able to complete the game using extra content available on the net in its current state; despite this, it was one of the most popular titles for piracy during the first week of March 2008.

It was made public on 1 April that Assassin's Creed would be sold electronically and available for pre-order through Valve's software distribution program, Steam, and though advertised to the entire Steam customer base it was for unknown reasons locked out for any Steam-customers not in residing in North America (along with the entire Ubisoft catalog).[citation needed] The PC version of Assassin's Creed was released on 8 April 2008 in North America. Four bonus mission types, not seen in the console version, are included. These 4 new missions are archer assassination, rooftop race challenge, merchant stand destruction challenge and escort challenge.

A significant amount of criticism has lately been appearing on the internet about the fact that players who have beat the gmaes are unable to skip cutscenes

Army of Two, commonly abbreviated as AoT or Ao2, is a video game developed by Electronic Arts, released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 4, 2008 in North America. Army of Two is a third person shooter gmaes focusing on the fictional story of two private military contractors(characterized as mercenaries) "fight[ing] through war, political turmoil, and a conspiracy so vast it threatens the entire world" in a timeline spanning from 1993 to 2009.

Focusing on cooperative strategies, Army of Two's highlighting feature is the necessity to use coordinated teamwork to accomplish the gmaes 's goals. While the gmaes is meant to be played with another human as your partner, a "Partner Artificial Intelligence"(PAI) is also included and programmed to follow the player's strategies in suit. Dependence on your partner(whether human or PAI) is so pronounced that certain objectives may be impossible to complete without it.

Plot
The plot summary in this article or section is too long or detailed compared to the rest of the article.
Please edit the article to focus on discussing the work rather than merely reiterating the plot.

The main story is divided into several regions where the action takes place over the course of nearly two decades. The main focus of the story is the field of Private Military Contracting(PMC). While the game has been cut shorter, it does not alter any major events.

Somalia
The story begins in 1993 in Somalia when Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios (the protagonists of the gmaes ) are still in the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment. They go through a brief training course, taught by their comrade Pedro. Afterward, they are tasked to work with Philip Clyde, a private military contractor with the Security and Strategy Corporation (SSC), to assassinate Abdullahi Mo'Alim. After this mission, Philip Clyde, on behalf of SSC CEO, Ernest Stockwell, invites Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dalton (commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment) to join the company for a desk job. He agrees, asking to bring Salem and Rios with him as contractors and in the following year, the three enter the private sector.

Afghanistan
Salem and Rios begin an eight-year stretch of mercenary work in various U.S. operations until the events of September 11, 2001. They are then hired to infiltrate an abandoned Afghani Cold War era mountain missile base now in use by Al Qaeda in order to destroy the medium-range M-11 missiles left there, eliminate terrorist Al-Habiib, and rescue Brian Hicks(another SSC operative who was captured trying to accomplish the same tasks). After killing Al-Habiib, they destroy a cache of chemical warheads with the help of a hacker, "Section 8", romanticized in-game as "s3kshun8".

It is then announced in the news that SSC has acquired Black Mountain Industries, another PMC, making SSC the largest PMC in the world resulting in some controversy. Dalton reassures the public that their motives are pure.

Iraq
In 2003, the two are sent back to Iraq by mission coordinator Alice Murray, on a mission to rescue Lt. Col. Samuel Eisenhower, a friend from Salem and Rios' old Army Ranger squad. They are told that he has vital information and is being held hostage in an American base which has fallen under enemy control. Salem and Rios successfully extract him to a helicopter. However, soon after it lifts off, it explodes. Salem comments that with Eisenhower dead, he, Rios, Dalton, and their trainer, Pedro are the last surviving members of their former ten-man unit. Ali Youssef, an Iraqi terrorist, claims responsibility for Eisenhower's death, and the two are tasked with eliminating him, his lieutenant, and his Iraqi base.

After the mission, Senators Alex Richter and Richard Whitehorse discuss a bill coming before Congress in a televised debate. If passed, the bill would privatize the military, positioning SSC to become the primary contractor. Whitehorse is opposed to the bill while Richter wants it to be passed, commenting that private contractors often outperform regular soldiers.

USS Constellation
While fighting enemies in the Philippines, the two are contacted and reassigned by Alice to help retake an aircraft carrier, The USS Constellation, that has been stolen by a cell of terrorists from Abu Sayyaf. The two are transported there via helicopter and parachute down to the flight deck and are rejoined by Philip Clyde who they have not had to deal with since Somalia. Clyde goes below deck while Salem and Rios are tasked to disable the jets parked on the runways to disable the launching mechanism. Alice mentions that the Navy doesn't want SSC getting credit again, and so has dispatched a SEAL team to help. Eventually they go below deck hoping to find a way to the ship's bridge and inadvertently discover Clyde meeting with the terrorists.

Clyde escapes leaving his laptop's USB Flash Drive on the table which the two grab. It is then covertly sent to Section 8 to be analyzed. After fighting their way into the bridge, Navy Captain Harris of the USS Constellation informs them that the carrier has been turned into a nuclear bomb on a course to the Philippine capital, Manila, and that the two must sink the ship before it reaches the city. On the way to handle the situation, they discover the Navy team is dead. Rios and Salem discover their former squadmate, Pedro, is among the deceased. While maneuvering through the ship, 'Section 8' has uncovered what was on Clyde's USB Flash Drive revealing evidence that he has been leaking US troop positions and intelligence to the terrorists. They succeed in rigging the ship to explode and narrowly escape while Harris goes down with his ship. After completing the mission, they decide not to take any other missions from SSC since they do not know who else is working with Clyde. They decide to wait until they go public with the information.

United States Senators Alex Richter and Richard Whitehorse continue their debate on the bill to privatize the military. Richter believes that doing so would be safer and cheaper than a standing military. However, Whitehorse doesn't want to pass responsibility to corporations who profit from war and may drag the U.S. into unnecessary conflicts. Whitehorse begins a campaign to see the bill is not passed.

China
Salem and Rios, now in South Korea, are doing a job for one of their weapons suppliers, Cha Min Soo. The two have remained out of contact with SSC as they try to investigate Clyde's involvement with the terrorists and a link between SSC and U.S. enemies. Salem's radio is accidentally switched on and Murray contacts them with one final mission, in China. The leader of Abu Sayyaf, the organization that orchestrated the capture of the Constellation, will be crossing the bridge over the Lijiang River and the two are to ambush his motorcade.

After completing their assignment, Alice has lost sign of their extraction helicopter and the two find themselves dealing with the PLA, not Abu Sayyaf. After some digging, Alice discovers that a bounty has been put out for the two implicating their involvement with the murder of United States Senator Richard Whitehorse who was in the motorcade they just blew up instead of the Abu Sayyaf leader. Along the way, the two tell Alice why they fell out of contact letting her in on the potential conspiracy which is furthered by the apparent setup.

The three put the pieces together, guessing that Dalton and SSC CEO Stockwell set them up to kill Whitehorse to end his campaign against the bill and allow it to be passed. Rios and Salem were prime decoys, since they already knew about Clyde, who has been revealed by 'Section 8' to have been involved in ambushes on U.S. soldiers which were staged to damage the U.S. Army's reputation and further support for the bill. En route to escape from China, the two hear Alice being assaulted on the radio, presumably kidnapped. Having then escaped, they decide to end the fight.

Miami
In 2009, Salem and Rios are then en route to Miami where the headquarters of SSC is located. A hurricane is also headed toward the coast of Florida and the Air Force has sent two fighter jets to intercept their unauthorized flight into the United States, them having been given a plane by Cha Min Soo who tells them to take care of the pilot and bring the plane back in one piece. Compounding their troubles, Philip Clyde is found stowed aboard their plane, having killed the pilot.

A gunfight ensues, while the Air Force shoots and damages the plane. They manage to get into the plane's on-board hovercraft as the plane is going down, but Clyde picks up a fallen FGM-148 Javelin missile launcher and fires, blowing off half of the plane. Their hovercraft manages to touch down in the waters of Miami and they head to SSC island while Clyde is assumed dead in the crash. When Cha Min hears that his plane was crashed, he threatens to have Salem and Rios killed. They explain that Clyde was responsible, and Cha Min demands they kill him. Salem agrees, not letting Rios mention that Clyde may have already been killed. The two are under increasing pressure from Cha Min as he hacks into their helmet cameras, watching them. The two are then contacted via radio by Ernest Stockwell, requesting that they get him out. He claims that he was not involved with the conspiracy but it was all the work of Richard Dalton.

The two rescue the kidnapped Alice from the Miami Airport. After she is escorted away, the two storm SSC HQ where 'Section 8' helps them get the elevator online so they can pursue Dalton. Along the way, Stockwell accepts a deal from the two to turn himself in as Alice claimed he knew Dalton was breaking the rules, but not exactly what he was doing (sacrificing soldiers). Upstairs, the two are shocked to see that Clyde has survived the crash, but thankful that they can now calm an enraged Cha Min by closing their debt with him and securing later favors. After an immense firefight on SSC's top floor, Salem kicks Clyde out of a window, causing him to plummet into the flooded streets of Miami. Meanwhile, Dalton escapes to the roof, pursued by Rios and Salem. Although Dalton attacks them from a machine gun mounted on the door of a helicopter, Rios destroys it with an FIM-92 Stinger while he targets Salem, sending Dalton to his death.

For the ending sequence, the game skips ahead several months. A news broadcast announces that Ernest Stockwell, CEO of the now defunct SSC, has been released after serving three months of his six month prison sentence (having turned himself in as promised). The "Privatization Scandal" is also mentioned; the bill having not been passed. Alice, watching the broadcast, receives a phone call from Rios who tells her that he and Salem have started their own firm, Trans World Operations (TWO). When she asks how they got investors, the camera pans to look at Cha Min Soo and Viktor Roshankov, two of the arms dealers that they had worked with. Rios mentions that they need a contract filer and offers Alice the job. Alice smiles in agreement.

Customization
The game allows a great deal of weapon customization. Some guns available for customization include: pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, rocket launchers, light machine guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers and assault rifles. Such elements as stocks, under-slung grenade launchers, suppressors, grip handles, extra-large magazines and new barrels, can be swapped out to give the weapon a unique look. Other modifications include gold and chrome plating--also known as "pimping" in the gmaes . Pimping weapons will raise your player's aggro meter drawing more attention to you. The player can also upgrade their armor to make it better and stronger but these can not be purchased and are unlocked as you progress through campaign mode. A firing range feature was proposed that would allow the player to test out their newly customized weapon, however it was removed as it did not meet the developers' standards. Besides customizing the weapons and armor, the player can also customize the face masks that the main characters wear.

Online multiplayer
Multiplayer allows up to four players, two on each team similar to the co-op structure of the main campaign. Both teams will compete over objectives on the map such as assassinating a VIP or destroying an objective in order to earn the most money for their side. At the same time, they will also be forced to deal with the opposing team in order to secure their objectives. In the interview, the developer has stated, "The biggest challenge was to convey the co-op experience in a multiplayer match. We didn't want to go with the typical deathmatch mode. We have a variety of modes that really capture the essence of co-op gameplay. You'll have to watch each other's backs and work together to defeat the opposing team. "

Character customization is not possible in the multiplayer portion of the game but you can buy preset sets of weapons, upgrade your body armour and amount of ammo you can carry. Players need to be careful while shopping though, since the team with the most cash in the end wins.

There are 3 multiplayer gametypes: Warzone, Bounties and Extraction. In warzone the objectives are randomly generated and they may vary greatly. For example team might need to get to certain place and defend it, while other team tries to destroy it, shoot down the chopper, blowing up a jeep with gunner, transporting wounded soldiers to extraction point, assassinating V.I.P's etc... Extraction is basically Warzone but with rescuing V.I.P.'s to a safe location only. There are currently four maps total, and each are filled with hostiles native to the location. Also every map contains so called "intelligence", which if picked up will get you extra cash and the more intelligence picked up the more it is worth.

Multiplayer for the gmaes is currently region-locked. Players with the European, American or Asian version of the gmaes cannot play with each other. This is not common for online multiplayer games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Fight Night

Fight Night is the name of several boxing video gmaes .

One gmaes , published by U.S. Gold, was released for Atari ST and Commodore 64 in the late 1980s. The gmaes included both a single player mode and dual player mode. Also featured was the ability for the player to customize the player's boxer. In total, there were about twelve boxers to beat. The version on the Atari 7800 is especially clunky and slow paced.

An unrelated gmaes with a similar name is Fight Night 2004, produced by EA Sports. The game has been followed by Fight Night: Round 2 and Fight Night Round 3. 2k Sports has not picked up the series, but are making their own boxing game.2k Sports's boxing gmaes is called Don King Presents: Prizefighter and its due for release in Spring 2008. But EA Sports has confirmed that EA Canada is making a Fight Night Round 4 since EA Chicago studios shutdown, but the release date is not known yet.

Dragon Quest VIII :Journey of the Cursed King: features, reviews

Dragon Quest (ドラゴンクエスト, Doragon Kuesuto?), published as Dragon Warrior in North America until the 2005 release of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, is a series of role-playing gmaes produced by Enix (now Square Enix). Installments of the series have appeared on MSX computers, Famicom/NES, Super Famicom/Super NES, Game Boy Color, gmaes Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and Wii video game consoles, as well as on several models of mobile phone. As of December 19, 2007, the Dragon Quest series has sold over 43 million units worldwide. It is Square Enix's most successful franchise after Final Fantasy; although, Dragon Quest is arguably the most popular video gmaes franchise in Japan.

Dragon Quest's North American name was changed due to a trademark conflict with the role-playing gmaes DragonQuest, which was published by veteran war game publisher SPI in the 1980s until the company's bankruptcy in 1982 and purchase by TSR, which then published it as an alternate line to Dungeons & Dragons until 1987. In 2003, Square Enix registered the Dragon Quest trademark in the US, signaling the end of the Dragon Warrior moniker.

Overview
During the mid-1980s, Dragon Quest was created by Yuji Horii, who has been the scenario director since. The series monster and character designs, as well as box art, were by famed Dragon Ball manga artist, Akira Toriyama. All of the music for the Dragon Quest series has been composed by Koichi Sugiyama. When Horii first created Dragon Quest, most people doubted that a fantasy series with swords and dungeons instead of science fiction would become popular in Japan, but the series has become a phenomenon there.

The first six Dragon Quest games' stories are divided into two trilogies. The first three games of the series tell the story of the legendary hero known as Roto (also known as Erdrick or Loto in the American NES and GBC versions, respectively). Dragon Quest IV-VI are based around a castle in the sky called Zenithia, and are referred to as the Tenku in Japan, meaning Heaven. The main series from Dragon Quest VII on are independent of each other and stand alone.

The games themselves feature a number of religious overtones--saving the gmaes (in later gmaes ) and reviving characters who have died is performed by clergy in churches. Bishops are often seen wandering around the overworld of Dragon Warrior Monsters and have the ability to heal. The final enemy in some of the Dragon Quest games is known as the Demon Lord. For instance, in Dragon Warrior VII, the Demon Lord, known as Orgodemir in that particular game, is the final boss, and there is also a sidequest to battle God himself.

Dragon Quest is such a cultural phenomenon in Japan that there are live-action ballets, musical concerts, and audio CDs based on the Dragon Quest universe. The London Philharmonic Orchestra has performed for several Dragon Quest music albums. It was the first video game series to have its music performed live by an orchestra. Since 1987, music from Dragon Quest has been performed annually in Japan in concert halls. In Japan, due to complaints of mass absenteeism from schools and places of work, Enix changed its policy of releasing new Dragon Quest gmaes on weekdays.

Outside Japan
Dragon Quest is not nearly as successful outside Japan, having been eclipsed by Final Fantasy and other RPG series. Because of Enix America Corporation's closure in the mid 1990's, Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VI were never officially released in North America. In Europe, none of the gmaes except Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and Dragon Warrior Monsters have seen release. The lack of official localizations for Dragon Quest games has inspired many fan translation projects. The legal status of these translations, while untested in court, are considered to be illegal. The completed fan translation projects include Dragon Quest V and the Super Famicom remake of Dragon Quest I & II.

The first four Dragon Warrior titles suffered from substantial censorship in their North American localizations, largely in keeping with Nintendo of America's content guidelines at the time, which placed severe restrictions on religious iconography and mature content. Both graphics and text were edited, replacing coffins with ghosts, crucifixes with five-point stars, and "Priest" with "Healer," to name but a few. The "puff-puff massage" scenario was also taken out of the first two games. However, the graphics, sound and menus of Dragon Warrior and Dragon Warrior II were given an upgrade for American release. When these games were remade for the Game Boy Color, many of these censorships were taken out. Since Dragon Warrior VII, the gmaes have been kept similar to their original versions when going through localization.

Only two titles in the series have been released in Europe. The first was Dragon Warrior Monsters published by Eidos Interactive; the second was Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, but the gmaes was marketed as Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King. However, the series is one of Square Enix's flagship titles, and it is currently planning to release at least four upcoming installments in the series outside Japan. With the Square Enix merge in 2003, the number of places that Dragon Quest gmaes are released has greatly increased.

Common elements

Gameplay

Typical battle from Dragon Warrior IIIThe Dragon Quest system is similar to the basis of the Ultima and Wizardry video gmaes systems, as well as gmaes like Final Fantasy, which came later. The game player's party walks into a town and buys weapons, armor, and items in order to defeat monsters easily. When the player's party is out of the town, the party is vulnerable to random monster attacks. When players encounter monsters, they have several options from which to choose through menus. The player can attack and defeat the enemy with weapons, magic, or items. The player can also attempt to run away from the fight. However, this option is not available during a boss battle. After a player wins a battle by defeating all the monsters, the player's party members gain experience points (EXP) in order to gain new levels. When a certain character gains a new level, the stats of the character are upgraded.

When the player's party dies in battle, the group will lose half of their gold and the leader of the party warps back to the nearest church. The leader then needs to pay a priest to revive his/her party members. More recent gmaes in the series have banks in many towns that allow the player to store gold, which prevents it from being lost when the party dies.

To save one's progress, the player must visit a Church (also known as a House of Healing in early North American versions) and talk to a priest or nun. In early versions of Dragon Quest, the player must visit a king in order to save his or her progress (this does not include the first two Dragon Quest titles for the Famicom, which use a password system).

Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Quest VI, and Dragon Warrior VII feature several classes to choose for the party members. Typical classes include the fighter, paladin, and mage. Each installment possesses its own particular set of classes.

The typical Dragon Quest plot involves a certain villain to be defeated at the end of the gmaes , usually one who threatens the world in some way. However, the plotline often consists of smaller stories involving different NPC's the player meets as the adventure goes on.

Monsters

Rocket, a slime starring in Dragon Quest Heroes. The series features several recurring monsters, such as Slimes, Drackies, Shadows, Mummies, Trick Bags, and Dragons. Many of the monsters have been designed by Akira Toriyama. Many of the Dragon Quest monsters have been featured in the Dragon Quest Monsters series of gmaes , which allows the player to catch monsters and use them in battle. This idea is also used in Dragon Quest V, although humans fight in battle as well.

The official mascot of the Dragon Quest series is the Slime. A Slime is a small blob with a face, shaped like an onion or Hershey's Kiss. It has appeared in every Dragon Quest game and it is usually one of the first monsters the player encounters. The Slime's popularity has netted it two spinoffs: Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. They also make a significant showing in the Japanese manga and two-episode anime Dragon Half.

In 1989, a manga was published by Enix called Dragon Quest Monster Story, which had nothing to do with Dragon Quest Monsters. This book featured short stories about various Dragon Quest monsters and came with a poster that featured the "families" of monsters.

Recurring Themes

Loto
Loto, also known as Roto or Erdrick (in the NES localizations) (Japanese: ロト), is a legendary hero from the Dragon Quest series. The first three Dragon Quest games make up the "Loto trilogy," which are all connected to the legend of Loto. He is known in the game as the hero who freed Alefgard from darkness. The name Erdrick was first mentioned in the English localization, Dragon Warrior in which the player is referred to as Erdrick's descendent. Erdrick’s legend was completed with the 1991 release of Dragon Warrior III.

In Dragon Warrior, Loto was the ancestor of the Hero. The Hero follows in the footsteps of Loto to ultimately reach the Dragonlord's Castle and confront the Dragonlord. In Dragon Warrior II, the heroes are descendants of Loto, and also of the Hero from Dragon Warrior. At the end of Dragon Warrior III, the King of Alefgard bestows upon the Hero “the Order of Loto”, the country’s highest honor reserved only for true heroes. While this implies Loto is merely a title, it is possible to name the Hero Loto at the beginning of Dragon Warrior III. In Dragon Warrior III, the origins of the hero Loto are revealed; therefore, the chronological order of the first three games is III, I, II.

The Hero, originally known as Erdrick to many English-speaking players, is also known by two other names. In the original Japanese language games (Dragon Quest), Erdrick is known exclusively by the name Roto, which is also used by some import gamers. Another romanization of the name is Loto, which was used in place of Erdrick when Enix America, Inc. re-released Dragon Warrior I, II, and III on the Game Boy Color. This was most likely used because the Japanese language does not distinguish between L and R.

In the original Final Fantasy, Square parodies Dragon Quest by displaying a grave for Erdrick in the town of Elfland. In retaliation, Enix hid a Cid grave in Dragon Quest III. A parody of Erdrick's sword is wielded by Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy XII: it is referred to as the "Wyrmhero Blade" (In the Japanese version, it is called "Tolo Sword").

Zenithia
Zenithia, also called Zenith Castle or simply Zenith, is the name of a fictional sky castle from the series. The first appearance is in Dragon Warrior IV, and the castle is one of several elements from Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI which suggest the three games are linked as a trilogy; this group is often called the Tenkū (Japanese for Heaven), or the Tenkū no Shiro (Castle in the Sky) trilogy. A castle in the Dragon Warrior III remakes for Super Famicom/Game Boy Color is also called Zenith, though the layout differs from the castle from the Tenku series.

In Dragon Warrior IV, Zenithia can be accessed by climbing the Tower near Gottside, which goes as far up to the sky. It is directly above the entrance to the world of darkness. In Dragon Quest V, Zenithia has fallen into a lake south of Elheaven. This happened when the Golden Orb, half of a set of magical orbs that supported the castle in the sky, fell from its place. Once recovered and returned to Master Dragon, Zenithia will rise again. This time, the castle can move freely around the sky. In Dragon Quest VI, Zenith Castle is sealed away by Demon Lord Durran, and a giant hole is left behind in its place in the Dream World. After the Dream World returns to its natural state, Zenith Castle is the only part of it that can still be seen floating above the real world.

Square Enix has released the Celestial Sword (the Zenithian Sword) and Sword of Ramias as part of their Dragon Quest Legend Items series - miniature collectible toy replicas of artifacts from the Dragon Quest universe.

In development for the Nintendo DS handheld system.
At a press conference in Japan celebrating the 20th anniversary of Dragon Quest, Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest IX is in development for the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system. The full title is reported to be Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Sky (or Protectors of the Starry Sky, depending on translation), and is the next main installment in the series by Level-5, not a spin-off or side quest. This will be the first installment of the series that will be exclusive to a handheld system rather than a home console. Notably, this would have also been the first installment to feature real-time combat as well as four player co-op over wi-fi, but it was later reported that the system had been changed back to a turn based format.

Spinoffs
The franchise also includes several spin-off series, including Dragon Quest Monsters and Slime MoriMori Dragon Quest, as well as arcade games like the Japanese game Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road.

In 1993, Chunsoft created a Super Famicom game for Torneko Taloon, also known as simply Taloon to American gamers, a fictional character first appearing in Dragon Warrior IV. The game, titled Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon which loosely translates to Torneko's Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon, was a roguelike which continued Torneko's story from Dragon Quest IV, where he wished to make his store grow even further by venturing into mysterious dungeons and getting more items for stock. It was very successful, both on namesake and quality.

The Torneko gmaes use a roguelike battle system.A direct sequel to Torneko no Daibouken came out in Japan and the United States in 2000 called Torneko: The Last Hope. This game was very similar to the first, but it is considered much easier by comparison. It was received well enough in Japan to warrant a third direct sequel, on the PlayStation 2, titled Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon 3. Both the second and third Torneko games have been ported to the gmaes Boy Advance.

Following the success of Torneko, many other Fushigi no Dungeon games were published by various companies (most of which developed by Chunsoft), among the best known are Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon and Nightmare of Druaga: Mysterious Dungeon. The most recent additions to the genre are Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Dragon Quest Yangus.

A card-based arcade game, known as Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road and developed by Level-5, was released exclusively in Japan.

Finally, two spinoffs are played by physically swinging a controller using it as a sword to slash enemies among other things. Kenshin Dragon Quest is a stand alone gmaes which comes with the a toy sword as the controller, and a toy shield containing the gmaes 's hardware. Dragon Quest Swords is an exclusive Wii title which uses the motion sensing abilities of the Wii Remote similarly.

Development
Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama are the three most well known creators of the Dragon Quest series. Each of them has worked on each of the main games and are treated almost as celebrities in Japan.

In 1982, Enix sponsored a national video game programming contest, which brought much of the Dragon Quest team together, including Yuji Horii. The prize of the competition was a trip to America, and a visit to AppleFest '83 in San Francisco, where Horii discovered Wizardry. Koichi Nakamura and Yukinobu Chida, two other winners of the contest, along with Horii, released The Portopia Serial Murder Case for the Famicom for Enix. Sugiyama, already famous for jingles and pop songs, impressed with the group's work, sent a postcard to Enix, commenting on the software. In response, Enix asked him to write music for some of their gmaes . The group then decided to make a console role-playing game, using a combination of Wizardry and Ultima. Akira Toriyama, who knew Horii through Shonen Jump, was commissioned to illustrate the characters and monsters to separate the game from other RPGs of the time and the Dragon Quest "team" was born.

Dragon Quest gmaes have been developed by Chunsoft, Heartbeat, Artepiazza, and starting with Dragon Quest VIII, Level-5. Horii's own company, Armor Project, is in charge of the Dragon Quest gmaes, which were published by Enix and now Square Enix. While Toriyama is the series' character designer, the primary designs are first conceived by Horii, before being handed to Toriyama to re-draw under Horii's supervision.

Reception
Dragon Quest is often regarded as the most popular video gmaes series in Japan. Most of the gmaes in the main series as well as the spinoff games have sold over a million copies, some even selling over four million, and sell very quickly. For instance, the remake of Dragon Quest V sold 1.3 million copies in Japan in its first two days, which is a very high number for a remake. In 2006, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu readers voted on the hundred best video games of all time. Dragon Quest III came in third, Dragon Quest VIII came in fourth, Dragon Quest VII came in ninth, Dragon Quest V came in eleventh, Dragon Quest IV came in fourteenth, Dragon Quest II came in seventeenth, Dragon Quest came in thirtieth, and Dragon Quest VI came in thirty-fourth.

Although the game is a phenomenon in Japan, the game never garnered as much attention in North America. Although the first four gmaes to come to America generally received good reviews, it was not until Dragon Warrior VII was released did Dragon Quest become critically acclaimed there. One of the main aspects of the series that critics point out, either positively or negatively, is that the series "never strays from its classic roots". Unlike other modern, complex RPGs, Dragon Quest retains the simple gameplay from the first game, which many critics find refreshing and nostalgic. Other critics feel differently about the series, however, and claim that the story, characters, and gameplay have become boring and redundant over the years.

The original Dragon Quest gmaes is often claimed to be the birth of the console role-playing gmaes , despite the fact that many others consider Final Fantasy "more important." Dragon Warrior was listed on GameSpot's list of the 15 most influential gmaes of all time, calling it the "most influential role-playing game of all time" and stated that nearly all RPGs today have roots in its gameplay

Sports Gmaes- what discountedgame goes for

A sports game is a computer or video gmaes that simulates the playing of traditional sports. They are extremely popular, the genre including some of the best-selling gmaes .

Almost every familiar sport has been recreated with a gmaes , including baseball, association football, American football, boxing, wrestling, cricket, golf, basketball, ice hockey, tennis, bowling, rugby, hunting, fishing, etc.

Some games emphasize actually playing the sport (such as the Madden NFL series), while others emphasize the strategy behind the sport (such as Championship Manager). Others satirize the sport for comic effect (such as Arch Rivals). This genre has been popular throughout the history of video games and is extremely competitive, just like real-world sports.

A number of gmaes series feature the names and characteristics of real teams and players, and are updated annually to reflect real-world changes.

The genre is not to be confused with electronic sports, which is used to describe computer and video games which are played as competitive sports.

History
Beginnings of sports gmaes

Tennis for Two One of the first video games in history, Tennis for Two (1958), was a sports gmaes.

Computer games prior to the late 1970s were primarily played on university mainframe computers under timesharing systems that supported multiple computer terminals on school campuses. The two dominant systems were the Digital Equipment PDP-10 and the Control Data Corp. PLATO System. These systems displayed no graphics, only text. In the early 1970s they printed the text on teletype machines and line printers, but by the mid-seventies the text printed on single-color CRT screens.

Highlights of this era in sports games include:

Baseball (1971 — Written by Don Daglow at Pomona College, Baseball was the first computer baseball game, now recorded in the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. He continued to expand and refine Baseball throughout the 1970s, and its sabermetric approach provided the foundation for Daglow's later commercial games Intellivision World Series Baseball (1983, with Eddie Dombrower), Earl Weaver Baseball (1988, also with Dombrower), Tony La Russa Baseball (1991 through 1996) and Old Time Baseball (1995).
In the late 1970s arcade games began to appear, and sports were a popular genre. Highlights of this era include:

The first racing game was Night Driver (1976).
Atari Golf (1978),

1980
Pole PositionBetween 1980 and 1984 Atari and Intellivision waged a series of high-stakes TV advertising campaigns promoting their respective systems during the first round of console wars. Atari normally prevailed in arcade gmaes and had a deeper installed base due to its lower price, while Mattel's Intellivision touted its visually superior sports gmaes . Sports writer George Plimpton was featured in the Intellivision ads, which showed the parallel games side by side. Both Atari and Mattel fielded at least one game for baseball, football, hockey, basketball, auto racing and soccer.

Activision Tennis (1981)
Track & Field (1982)
Pole Position (1982).
In 1983 EA produced their first sports game Dr. J and Larry Bird Go One on One by Eric Hammond, which was also the first licensed sports game based on the names and likenesses of famous athletes. The gmaes was a major hit.

In 1983 Mattel released Intellivision World Series Baseball by Don Daglow and Eddie Dombrower, the first game to use multiple camera angles to show the action. Games prior to this displayed the entire field on screen, or scrolled across static top-down fields to show the action. IWSB mimicked television baseball coverage by showing the batter from a modified "center field" camera, showing baserunners in corner insets, and showing defensive plays from a camera behind home plate. It was also the first sports gmaes to introduce players with spoken words (as opposed to text) using the Mattel Intellivoice module. It received limited distribution due to the video game crash of 1983, and today is one of the most rare and expensive Intellivision cartridges on the collectibles market.

In 1984 game designer Scott Orr founded GameStar, a gmaes publisher specializing in Commodore 64 sports games, and served as lead designer. GameStar was the most successful sports gmaes company of its era, and Orr sold the company to Activision in 1986. The company's titles included:

On Court Tennis (1984)
Championship Baseball (1984)
GFL Championship Football (1985) -- American Football
Star Rank Boxing (1985)
Gamestar Basketball Association (GBA) Championship Basketball - Two-on-Two (1986)
Star Rank Boxing II (1987)
Top Fuel Eliminator (1987)
Face Off! (1987)
In 1988 EA released Earl Weaver Baseball by Don Daglow and Eddie Dombrower, which for the first time combined a highly accurate sim game with a high quality graphical action-style game. This was also the first game in which an actual baseball manager provided the computer AI. In 1996 Computer Gaming World named 'EWB to the #25 position on its list of the Best 150 Games of All Time, the second highest ranking for any sports game in that 1981-1996 period (after FPS Sports Football).

In 1989, Anco published Kick Off; it was immediately considered the pioneer of computer soccer games due to its many original features.

1990s
16-bit systems

The Creation of EA Sports -- In 1989 EA producer Richard Hilleman hired Gamestar's Scott Orr to re-design John Madden Football, then a disappointing Apple II gmaes , for the fast-growing Sega Genesis. Orr and Hilleman together developed the gmaes that we still recognize today as Madden Football, the best-selling title in the history of gmaes in North America. They focused on producing a great head-to-head two-player game with an intuitive interface and responsive controls. When the gmaes shipped it immediately became a major hit.

Sensible SoccerOrr joined EA full-time in 1991 after the success of Madden on the Genesis, and began a ten-year period of his career when he personally supervised the production of Madden Football. During this time Hilleman, Orr and their EA teams also created the following EA Sports hits, each of which was updated annually:

NHLPA Hockey
NCAA Football
Andretti Racing
NASCAR Racing (later called NASCAR Thunder)
Knockout Kings
Sensible Software's Sensible Soccer (1992) still retains a cult following today. The 16-bit era also saw the launch of many of the EA Sports sports franchises, including the FIFA, NHL, NBA Live and Madden NFL series.

32-bit / 64-bit systems The arrival of Sony's PlayStation and 3D graphics cards on the PC enabled sports games to make the leap into 3D. Actua Soccer was the first soccer game to make use of a 3D engine.

On PC

In 1995 Sierra released FPS Sports Football. The next year Computer Gaming World named it to the #12 position on its list of the Best 150 gmaes of All Time, the highest ranking for any sports game in that 1981-1996 period.

Sports gaming becomes big business
On 13 December 2004, Electronic Arts began a string of deals that granted exclusive rights to several prominent sports organizations, starting with the NFL. This was quickly followed with two deals in January securing rights to the AFL and ESPN licenses. This was a particularly hard blow to Sega, the previous holder of the ESPN license, who had already been affected by EA's NFL deal. As the market for football brands was being quickly taken by EA, Take-Two Interactive responded by contacting the Major League Baseball Players Association and signing a deal that granted exclusive third-party major-league baseball rights; a deal not as restrictive, as first-party projects were still allowed. The NBA was then approached by several developers, but declined to enter into an exclusivity agreement, instead granting long-term licenses to Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive, Midway gmaes , Sony, and Atari. In April, EA furthered its hold on football licensing by securing rights to all NCAA football brands.

Types of sports gmaes

Arcade
Sports gmaes have traditionally been very popular arcade games. The competitive nature of sports lends itself well to the arcades where the main objective is usually to obtain a high score. The arcade style of play is generally more unrealistic and focuses on a quicker gameplay experience. Examples of this include the NFL Blitz and NBA Jam series.

Simulation
In comparison to arcade sports gmaes , the simulation style of play is a usually a more realistic rendition of the real-life sport it emulates. Examples include the Madden NFL series and the NBA Live series.

Management
Sports management games put players into the role of team manager. Whereas fantasy games are often played online against other players, management gmaes usually pit the player against AI controlled teams. Players are expected to handle strategy, tactics, transfers, and financial issues. Examples include Football Manager and Computer Simulated Fantasy Baseball League, known in the vernacular as CSFBL.

Fantasy
A Fantasy sport is a gmaes where fantasy owners build a team that competes against other fantasy owners based on the statistics generated by individual players or teams of a professional sport. Fantasy can also refer to fictional sports, see The fantasy element below.

Sports RPG
Sports Role-playing games are games which combines RPG elements into any sports genre. Level-5's upcoming Soccer RPG gmaes , Inazuma Eleven, is one of the many sports RPG's that define the sub-genre. Namco's racing RPG gmaes , Final Lap Twin, is another game which defines the sub-genre. Camelot's GBC versions of gmaes such as Mario Golf and Mario Tennis also has RPG elements in it's single player modes.

gmaes and televised sports
More and more, video sports games are starting to look and act like their TV counterparts. Additionally, televised sports, namely American football, have added Madden-style cameras to their coverage, further blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Sports commentators will often play a game of Madden Football before a big game (such as the Super Bowl), to help gain insight on the outcome.

Sports gmaes today
The sports genre is currently dominated by EA Sports and 2K Sports, who hold licenses to produce gmaes based on official leagues. EA's franchises include the FIFA Soccer series, the NBA Live series, the Madden Football series, the NASCAR series and Tiger Woods series. All of these games feature real leagues, competitions and players. These games continue to sell well today despite many of the product lines being over a decade old, and receive, for the most part, consistently good reviews. EA Games' Need for Speed series continues to be one of the best-selling in the racing genre, although it is not based on a license.

With EA Sports' domination, the market has become very difficult to enter; competing gmaes in any of the above genres, with the exception of racing games, tend to be unsuccessful. This has led to a sharp drop in sports-themed titles over recent years. One of the most notable exceptions is Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series, which is often hailed as an alternative to the FIFA series, but does not contain as many licensed teams, players, kits, or competitions. Racing gmaes , due to the variation that the sport can offer in terms of tracks, cars and styles, offer more room for competition and the selection of games on offer has been considerably greater. Sports management gmaes , while not as popular as they used to be, live on through small and independent software development houses. Management titles today have transitioned to the very popular fantasy sports leagues, which are available through many websites such as Yahoo.

Nintendo has been able to make an impact upon the sports market by producing several Mario-themed titles, such as Super Mario Strikers and Mario Tennis. These titles sell respectfully, but are only available on Nintendo's video gmaes consoles, the GameCube, Nintendo 64, and Wii; in 2006, they launched Wii Sports for Wii, which uses the Wii Remote to simulate movement.

The fantasy element
Some sports gmaes are based on fictional sports, usually of a fantasy or science fiction nature. One of the most notable examples of this is the Speedball series; Speedball 2 was a huge success, particularly on the Commodore Amiga. Bearing some similarities to Team handball, the gmaes introduces a number of futuristic gadgets that affect the gameplay immensely. Brutality is permitted; it is considered legal and acceptable to bash opponents with a metal ball. A number of sports have received the sci-fi treatment over the years, most frequently in the racing genre. F-Zero popularized the futuristic racing genre, and was followed by a number of sequels.

A number of games introduce fantasy elements to existing sports, subtle or otherwise, to add comedic effect to a gmaes , such as Brutal Sports Football, released by Millennium in 1992. Like Speedball, the gmaes was inspired by American football, but placed a larger focus on injuring, maiming, and even killing opponents. It is possible to win a match by simply decapitating the entire opposing team.

In some titles contained within this extended genre, the fantasy element is less prominent, particularly in titles such as Ready 2 Rumble and Outlaw Golf — games that, while strategically true to the sport, introduce comedy elements that would not realistically be seen in a serious simulation. For example, in Outlaw Golf, the choice of characters includes a stripper, a rapper, a Latin American Casanova-style figure and a mad scientist. Golf balls leave trails of smoke and fire when hit hard and the gmaes features an over-enthusiastic and sarcastic commentator.
